PATAGONIA CHILE

In the Southernmost part of Chile (the austral zone), the geography and nature emerge from the most extreme and spectacular forms that it is possible to imagine, adorned with breathtaking landscapes: a pristine concert of native forests, pampas, islands, fjords, channels, fast flowing rivers, lakes and lagoons, hotsprings, majestic millenary icefields and snowdrifts.  It is a zone of extinguished cultures, old cattle ranches and important explorers.This is the Chilean Patagonia that embraces Palena Province, Los Lagos Region and Magallanes Region.


TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK


This National Park has an spectacularly beautiful landscape, trails qualified to do trekking, and thus travel through different scenarios of pampas, black magallanean forests, lakes and lagoons with icebergs and imposing glaciers, all of this surrounded by huge rocky masses that characterize the figure of the Torres del Paine. Nirre and lenga forests cover the huemules, condors, nandues (South American ostriches) and guanacos. The park is located in the Magallanes Region and the Chilean Antarctica, which capital city is Punta Arenas. It is located at 3.090 km to the south of Santiago, and at approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes by plane.

Currently, this national park is the only one in the region that has the best infrastructure and facilities, tourist lodging (hotels, lodges, camping), not to mention the wide variety of guided excursions such as horseback riding, trekking, sailing, walks on ice and kayaking, among others. It has been declared biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It has three accesses: Portería Sarmiento, Amarga and Blue Lagoon.

In CONAF’s headquarters (National Forest Corporation) a scale model orients visitors about the layout of this mountainous mass formation. It also gives details of the different excursion trails, climbing, and of the main areas to visit, activities that can be carried out and precautions to be taken. This administrative headquarter has a medical station with a nurse, a public telephone and Policemen patrols trained for mountain rescues.

The different excursions offer the possibility to enjoy a variety of landscapes and different ecosystems that embrace a luxurious flora and fauna, experience that will be the predilection of adventurers and tourists fond of trekking. These factors have been an ever increasing reason for the affluence of a great number of tourists from all over the world to visit this wonder of nature. In each circuit there are private refugees and campings, which offer services that, have to be paid, as well as free of cost refugees and campings. Camping can only be done in duly authorized places.
 
WHAT TO DO AT TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK
River Kayaking
Torres del Paine, one of nature’s most spectacular beauties in the southern hemisphere, makes the ideal setting to kayak in the Serrano River, which allows access to places difficult to reach by going through watercourses that bring you to unexplored spots of unsurpassable beauty and the Serrano and Balmaceda glaciers, enjoying the spectacle of thousand year old ice and floating icebergs, incomparable in the planet.
 
Trekking
Trekking in Torres del Paine really does mean a meeting with nature. There is a great diversity in the pristine landscape which characteristics are unique on the planet. There are 7 excursion trails of different levels of difficulty; some take 5 hours, the longest take 7 days. They allow you, in the forest lenga and coigue setting, to access the most beautiful rivers, valleys, mountains, cliffs and thousand year old glaciers. The blocks of ice which fall in lakes and lagoons, show whimsical shapes and tones that are picture perfect.

Torres del Paine: It is the biggest center, on a world wide scale, of classic trekking. With various levels of difficulty, the trails allow you to reach peaks, rivers, valleys, and glaciers of extraordinary beauty. The Pingo sector and the Tyndall valleys are probably the least visited of the park; and one of the most spectacular, along with the Zapata Glacier, that arrive directly to the lake.

Paine Circuit: it is one of the longest treks in the park, seven or ten days walking, it goes around Macizo Paine, starting at low altitude and climbing until it reaches a thousand meters, passing by rivers, lakes and glaciers like Grey, Perros and Dickinson, one of the biggest in the park and suitable for ice climbing.

Verde Lagoon Circuit: a trek of 5 hours. It starts in the administrative center of the park, taking the main road, near to Weber bridge over the Paine River, through abundant vegetation, going higher to enjoy this special place: the formidable silhouette of the Cuernos del Paine, el Monte Almirante Nieto and the Paine Grande until you arrive at the Laguna Verde camp; it is one of the easiest circuits to do and also one of the most beautiful.
 
Mountain Biking
In Torres del Paine nature reaches its maximum splendor on a bike, it allows you to enjoy the weather and the adrenaline to the max, with its beautiful panoramic views, forests of lenga and coigue and beautiful mirrors of water which reflect the Andes Mountain Range, all under the serene flight of the condor.
Get to the top and enjoy the panoramic views of Sofia Valley and Eberhand Fjord and well in the distance, the start of the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers, is the deserved trophy of the most experienced sportsperson.
 
Horseback Riding

Also there are possible trips to old cattle farms where you can enjoy an authentic barbecue of spit roast lamb, accompanied by a traditional pisco sour (distilled grape alcohol mixed with lemon juice, ice and sugar) a typical drink that, usually delights all those who have had the chance to try it.
